Nuroosa – The Gathering Place

Context

Nuroosa is a new small business based in Derbyshire, aiming to open in the summer of 2025. Nuroosa will be a venue hiring business, with one building which shall accommodate weddings, wakes, corporate get aways, and well being visits. The building is currently under construction; however, it will be modern design, and have multiple rooms including a kitchen and a main hall. Surrounding the building is lots of green space, with flowers, trees and grass.

Nuroosa also aims to be as sustainable as possible, with the use of composting toilets, and other measures. In the future Nuroosa hopes to hold wedding ceremonies on site, which would take place under a tree. They also hope to build accommodation on site to allow visitors to stay overnight.

Brief

Ahead of their opening in the summer of 2025, Nuroosa would like to start promoting themselves, as well as take bookings months in advance. In order to achieve this Nuroosa needed a coherent brand which reflects their values, as well as business cards. They also thought a sign outside the property could help promote the opening of their business to locals, and in the future, would be used to clearly mark what is quite a hidden entrance to the property.

Logo Design

Research

After both parties agreeing we should work together on this project I visited the sight in Derbyshire, which allowed me to best visualise the space, and what the business will look like once opened. To help the later ideation process I ensured to conduct thorough research, building on top of the research already done by the client.

The client helpfully provided me with:

  • Context to the business
  • Images documenting the progress of Nuroosa so far
  • A list of words describing Nuroosa
  • A list of words that don’t describe Nuroosa
  • Images representative of the vision they have for Nuroosa
  • Colours they like
  • Businesses they like

With the supplied material, I:

  • Sorted the images into mood boards
  • Identified some of the shared elements to the supplied images
  • Created an initial colour palette
  • Identified and analysed the visual identity of competitors
  • identified and analysed the visual identity of other companies which had branding which reflected the brand values of Nuroosa
  • Created a condensed list of brand values
  • Word mapped this condensed list of brand values, beginning to work out how to reflect these visually

Initial Logo Concept

Based on my initial research I sketched many concepts, all aiming to reflect Nuroosa’s services, values, or both. I presented my three most successful ideas to the client, of which they picked the following:

The idea behind this concept was an abstract representation of the venue shape, made in the negative space of flowing lines which aimed to reflect community, togetherness, and caring.

Following the client approval of the initial concept sketch, I began to digitally develop the logo.

My supervisor suggested that I should consider other methods of adding typography to the logo, pointing out the slightly awkward effects that stem from curving text around a circle.

After presenting this initial development to the clients, I received feedback that it all felt far too perfect, and had massively changed from the original design; they had liked the imperfection in the original sketch, particularly how the bounding shape wasn’t completely circular. Through discussion it was also suggested that incorporating vertical lines into the design could reflect trees.

In an attempt to make the design feel more natural, I explored creating a lino cut of the design. This resulted in inspiring a whole new visual direction for the brand.

My supervisor was pleased with the visual style of this logo, feeling that it was very unique, and that the vertical lines were successfully reflecting trees. It was also advised that I should try to get the representation of the building closer to the true shape of the building.

With this logo development the clients felt that the heavy shapes, while unique, were not reflecting them nor Nuroosa’s brand values. They also felt that the lines on top of the building looked like they should spell something out, particularly as it starts with what looks like an ‘N’ then a ‘U’ – (NUroosa). They still felt that the original sketch was a much more successful direction.

After having received feedback two meetings in a row that the logo should return to the visual style of the original sketch, I decided that the best way of recreating this visual style was to through a more refined sketch. I also explored with the use of oil pastels to create a rough effect which would reflect sustainability, and the idea of a bespoke service. Upon reflection I was too hesitant to explore creating the logo directly from a sketch; listening to the clients wishes earlier would’ve saved time for both parties.

Street Sign

Proposed street sign design for Nuroosa

The solution to the street sign was very simple, this was due to two main reasons:

  • It would be located on the side of a 60mph country road, meaning it would have a very short view time
  • The purpose of the sign is mark the hidden entrance to the property for guests

Because of these two reasons, I suggested that the sign should only contain the primary logo, and that the inclusion of a website, or description of the business would likely be illegible, and only lead to visual confusion.

Conclusion

This project was a great success. The clients were very happy with the results, and so am I. We both feel the branding reflects Nuroosa’s values, but also reflect them – which is important with such a personal business.

While I’m very happy with the result of the branding, business cards, and proposed sign design, there were areas for improvement throughout the design process. After getting the approval of the initial sketch, I immediately stretched the possibilities of that concept, ultimately drifting away from the initial style and feel. While I think it was a good thing to explore different visual styles, I should’ve also supplied the client what they had suggested they wanted as well, which would’ve led to fairer comparisons of the different options, and saved time for both parties.

The main takeaway from this project is a better understanding and developed skills relating to client communication. At the start of the project I had underestimated the importance of client communication, but I know realise that without the clients own input, the branding could’ve never truly reflected themselves, nor their vision for Nuroosa. By the end of this project I gained confident in our meetings, and feel I’ve learnt how to better effectively steer the clients towards certain decisions, and away from others.

Looking to the future, I hope to maintain a relationship with Nuroosa, and support them with other required material.

I’ve also discovered my enjoyment in branding projects, and hope to explore this pathway within graphic design further.

Wychwood Project Rebrand

Background

The Wychwood Project is a registered conservation charity located in Wychwood, covering an area of 120 square miles. Its focus is to encourage and help locals to understand, conserve and restore the landscapes and habitats. The charity was started in 2000 with the branding remaining the same since its initial establishment. It now needs a refresh of the entire brand identity which will increase the engagement and reflect the conservation efforts in the local area. 

 

Brief/restated brief 

We aimed to create a professional brand identity that portrays the organisation’s values of conserving the landscape, wildlife and inhabitants in the Wychwood area. The new brand identity also had to ensure that it could be used to promote the charity and attract both a younger demographic as well as the current one. By applying the brand identity to different social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and twitter. We also designed a website storyboard that maps out an improved golden pathway, which the client can later develop into a fully realised website. For the visual identity the client requested to include some motifs from the old logo including the Oak tree and colours correlating to the theme of ‘conservation’. To create a recognisable brand identity that portrays the organisation’s values and message.

 

Deliverables 

The deliverables included a brand assets (e.g. colours, typography, name, strapline, logo), social media pages and a website storyboard which is consistent with all platforms. The aims for these are to showcase a new take on the brand identity which attempts to engage with a younger demographic whilst also introducing a revised name and strap line which accurately reflect the description of the organisation. 

 

Research and competitors 

Before starting the sketching process, we researched the different aspects of the organisation by going through their website and social media pages and identifying the most important parts of their work. This included things such as conserving the wildlife, the current oak tree logo and the colours used throughout. These all helped us to map out in which direction our initial logo sketches would go; which we concluded would be based around the ‘nature’ rather than ‘charity’ or ‘conservation’ aspects.

Looking at the current website helped to initialise the colour scheme which encouraged us to create colour scheme mood boards which we felt reflected the organisation. This was then used in the first vector sketches we created, along with some typeface experiments that we carried out. Through our research, we identified several conservation charities and organisations whose work and aims are similar to that of the Wychwood Project. This helped us to compare them, identifying which aspects made them each successful and unique, and what exactly our own designs need to compete. Notable organisations included:

  • RSPB 
  • The Earth Trust 
  • The Wildlife Trust 
  • WWF 

After comparing their brand identities, websites and social media pages, we noticed several features which each organisation shared that arguably made them successful in their field. These include:

  • The use of high quality photography to portray their organisation and its activities 
  • The use of colour across all platforms to create a unique brand identity which stands out from the rest and allows users to identify the organisation 
  • A mix of full length images and smaller images across their websites to keep users engaged 

The current audience for the Wychwood Project are typically older members who have time to volunteer in the activities. These members help the charity as they are willing to invest money into the projects. With the rebrand of the charity, the client wanted to maintain this current audience whilst also being able to engage to a wider demographic, such as families and children as well as local businesses and societal groups. 

 

Design development:

  • Name and strapline

In terms of the name and strapline, we researched other charities and organisations in the same field and analysed what works and what doesn’t; which are the most successful in reflecting their aims and values. We curated a list based on this which we felt were in line with Wychwood’s own aims. We curated a list of name and strapline ideas, where the client chose their favorite leading us to coming to a decision on which we should use.

  • Logo

We sketched some initial ideas based on the client’s feedback. This involved the concept of an oak tree which would help to portray the organisation clearly to all users. After several experimentations with this idea, we decided to broaden our design concept beyond the simple idea of an oak tree and explore other elements. Referring back to the user study that we have made earlier we wanted the whole brand to be contemporary yet still connect to the existing market. This enabled us not only to create a design which was visually more appealing and generally unique, but also to break away from the regular circular design and play around with layout and colour. 

Using the client’s feedback for the new set of designs we managed to narrow down three visually different styles on which we could improve, we started to experiment with colour choice, typeface and the positioning of elements. The first logo is a hand-edited typeface created from an already existing typeface which we believe enables a sense of identity to the brand. The second logo is based around the basic idea of a tree, whilst combining other elements to create a unique visual design. The use of the owl and tree in conjunction with the ‘W’ creates an individual identity which audiences can easily relate to the organisation. The third Logo focuses on other elements of the Wychwood area rather than just the idea of an oak tree. The deer is the most visually recognisable and so can be identified by members of any age group.

While designing the logos we explored different colours schemes that had neutral tones with accented colours. Eventually, we stuck with a natural colour scheme to ensure that Wychwood’s message of conserving wildlife was still portrayed. As for the typography, the two chosen typefaces worked the best with the logos, colour scheme and layout. 

 

After back and forth feedback we reverted back to the core oak tree image, as it is what viewers associate the organisation with. For the final logo, it is based around the idea of a tree but presented in a graphic way. We revived the original logo with a contemporary twist, having redrawn the tree and re-coloured it to create an individual identity that is both nostalgic and relevant. Creating a silhouette makes the logo clear and cohesive, as well as allowing it to work more efficiently as a logo at any size. The bright, acidic green colour reflects the aim of engaging with a younger audience and allows the tree to be both recognisable and intriguing.

  • Typography 

The typefaces chosen are suitable for the organisation as they are legible and accurately reflect the organisation’s values of conserving wildlife and wild places. They were also chosen as they are timeless therefore unlikely to feel outdated. For the logo we used ‘Varela Round Regular’ using the acidic green as a dominant colour.  Based on our typographic knowledge we attempted to change the clients’ mind regarding this typeface, as we believed it would be too light to work when scaled down, however the client insisted on this typeface. For the headings we used ‘Montserrat Regular’ in the same green. As for the body text, we used ‘Asap Regular’ in a stone grey colour.

  • Colour scheme 

For the colour scheme we referenced the original branding while giving it a more contemporary feel. Using neutral tones throughout, alongside a vibrant green and neutral lilac. The green would be used to separate information (used in headings, boxes and contact icons) while the lilac is used in the form of interactive buttons (sign up, donate and support). Both these colours are emphasised in the cover and display photos. The background colour used for the website is a green-tone white that acts as a backdrop for the acidic green headings, lilac boxes and grey tone body text.

 

  • Social media

We chose three main platforms to focus on social media presence which are Facebook, Instagram and twitter. For the social media pages we combined both photography from the organisation’s existing websites and social media with our logo along with the matching colour scheme, to create a sense of cohesion among all platforms. The layout and size of elements within the logo were tested with the mockups to ensure that they were legible at any size required.

Facebook: the mockup for the logo can be used across all social media platforms. The photography is chosen to be cohesive with the logo design. The continuous use of green and the minimalist photography helps the audience to focus their attention on mostly the logo which is the first sense of the organisation’s identity which will be seen. Instagram: the focus of the Instagram page is to create a complete individual identity for the organisation by combining both the logo design and the strapline. The mockup for the logo can be used across all social media platforms. The first mockup uses the logo in its original form, with green on white. We zoomed in on the logo to make the best use of the small space for the logo within the Instagram circle, to give focus. The second mockup uses the logo in its reversed colour form, with the white on green, which can be used as an alternate option.

  • Website golden path

For the prototype we chose to do a golden path for the website. This included pages such as  the ‘Homepage’, ‘About us’ and ‘Donate and Support’. The design of the website pages are both simple and professional. It has a basic linear format which is seen on most websites, allowing it to be visually engaging to a wide audience and easy to update. We incorporated elements of the logo within most of the website such as the tree silhouette and solid coloured boxes to create cohesion. The background colour used is a pale green that acts as a backdrop for the acidic green headings and grey tone body text. We packaged the website storyboard to have screenshots of each page, a walkthrough of the prototype and the website assets used.

 

 

Reflection

We believe that we have created a refreshed brand identity which differentiates the Wychwood charity from other similar organisations whilst also clearly portraying its aims and values. One of the main challenges that we faced was not receiving enough feedback in time. Our schedules had to work around the clients, which made it harder to plan out future input logs and the different steps for our design stages. Another challenge we faced was the fact that we were unable to visit the site which meant that we did not have a full sense of what the organisation entailed, making research slightly harder as all we had to go off of was the organisation website, social media and the information provided by the client. As a whole, the job took much longer than anticipated as it was originally set to be done in June but due to COVID-19 and our main client leaving the organisation, our deadline was extended as the other clients were much more flexible. 

What we learnt from this job is how to effectively manage our time and the workload so that we are constantly on target to reach the deadline. We also learnt how to work with different types of clients and what way is best when dealing with certain problems, such as the client not responding to our emails and calls for three weeks. We both agree that the final logo produced would not have been our first choice due to the fact that we find it to be too generic as there are already many brands and organisations who have a tree within their logo design. Also, we found that it has a direct correspondence to their original logo which we both were trying to steer away from. This was evident in our vast experimentation of logo illustrations and styles where we played around with incorporating animals and even solely typographic designs. We both pushed to have a more current typeface with a thicker output, however the client insisted on having the typeface light and simple. Nonetheless, we had to push our design preferences aside and give the client what they wanted, in return they were extremely satisfied with the end result. Regarding the website, we were relatively happy with the final outcome as it was a refreshed version of the original, being more dynamic for different screen sizes and enhancing the overall user experience with straightforward navigation.

We both worked extremely well as a team, dividing the work equally and helping each other throughout the entire project. Working together also allowed us to manage the time which we put into each deliverable in order to ensure that each was produced to the best of our ability. In future projects, we will make sure to use more persuasive techniques to convince our vision to the client. 

QVI Chiropody Clinic Promotional Material

This reflective report aims to explain the process and how the team tackled the brief, presented design ideas through to coming up with a successful design solution to the QVI Chiropody Clinic brief. The report will explain in detail the full process and present the final visual outcomes to the brief.

Allocation:

From meeting with JL we spoke about possible questions to ask the client at our first meeting, and the expectations of the brief. Also in the meeting as a collective we were able ask any questions we had regarding our first meeting with Deborah, and possible alterations that could be made to the existing branding of QVI. This was extremely helpful as it allowed to get a better understanding of what the client is looking for and how we will be able to meet their needs.

We discussed how to go about suggesting ideas such as additional colours to their current colour palette and how to work towards making the poster inclusive for all the audience (both the over 60s and the carers or health workers). It was also useful to be encouraged to take previous website options with us to the initial meeting with the client to work out what they would prefer from their website.

Going forward we have discovered some obstacles which we did not consider before. Different trustees within the charity have conflicting ideas about what designs would be appropriate so we must put forward a range of developed ideas to gain feedback and make sure to include trustees as much in the design process so they are more likely to feel tied to the design process and therefore appreciate our designs more.

Briefing:

Once we met the clients in a meeting, it became clearer to establish what they realistically wanted from this process. We gave them some opinions on deliverables and they made some changes, such as the dimensions of the appointment card and they also decided that it was not necessary to have a ‘hand out’ as well as a leaflet. At times is was difficult for the clients to agree amongst themselves which made the process slower, however we think we were successful in organising meetings with them, which lead them closer to deciding as a collective.

We had to get them to realise what they actually wanted to get out of the design process. They changed the outcomes from the initial brief so that we had get rid of the idea of a postcard sized information handout and merged it into a larger appointment card with the necessary information on the back. This was done through us generating ideas and gaining feedback from the clients as they were not 100% certain on what we could deliver to them.

This process ran smoothly with all parties communicating on what was required and the deadlines the needed to be met throughout the most part. One challenge that we faced as a collective was

after the briefing session, the trustee that briefed us, didn’t fully communicate with the rest of the staff and left gaps in the communication and knowledge of what was needed as the requirements were altered but not fully communicated with all of us. One key aspect that we found to be tricky when designing for QVI was the clashing of ideas between the trustees and the clinic manager. At some points throughout the process this seemed to slow our progress.

Research:

We compared our deliverables to similar surgeries to make sure our aesthetic suited the market and was familiar to potential and current patients. Based on this genre research, we were able to make successful designs and make improvements such as larger font (for older patients) we also took inspiration from other organisations; we established a colour palette for the deliverables and made them coherent as a set.

Promotional Material:

For inspiration we looked at other clinic logos as a comparison to what sort of style the client was after, we researched colour schemes surrounding teal, blue, white, green as clinical but approachable. We also looked at typefaces and did research about the best legibility for the elderly target market. We also looked at other appointment cards, leaflets and posters to see what our designs would be up against in the real world and how weak their original design was in comparison to their competitors.

Website research:

Our first meeting with the clients for website designing was successful, we first went and did research of competitor chiropodists both nationally and locally. Screenshots of various webpages were displayed to the clients where they then explained to us from looking at the various examples what they liked and what they disliked and if we could potentially carry certain areas over into the design of their website. From this we then started sketching up some screens of the webpage when they were present to make sure we were clear of their vision and what they were after.

Design:

Once we had established a ‘house style’ the production process ran a lot smoother as we had decided on a logo, motive, typeface and colour palette. All of which were saved in Adobe library so artwork could be dragged and dropped into InDesign. We made small changes to deliverables based on regular feedback from the clients, who made adjustments, based on their opinions, for example, the QVI ladies liked the circular shapes in the logo and asked if this could be incorporated throughout the printable deliverables, which helped them link to each other.

Promotional Material:


We began by looking at the the poster and working through different ideas. We began working on feet images and trying to develop our own digital versions using Adobe Illustrator and combining a fingerprint image to a foot outline. We decided to go for a more realistic approach and as it would reflect the clinical side of QVI. We came up with the dot aesthetic for the clinic as we wanted to use

geometric shapes to keep the design clean and sharp and the colour scheme made the design approachable and friendly.

Website design:

The design process overall went smoothly throughout the whole project and feedback was received and worked on in a quick efficient way. We first started building the new website through a programme they used previously called Yola however, this website builder was extremely difficult to use and was very old in comparison to alternative web design providers out there such as Square space and Wix. Production:

From working on the QVI project, this was a key opportunity to gain self-knowledge of what was needed in order to make the clients happy and be successful. As our first real job that was taken on suited us perfectly as it contributed to what we see ourselves doing as a career in the future which is branding related work. From taking on this real job we found that it ran smoothly throughout and there was strong communication between everyone throughout the most part, as we frequently went to the clinic and able to get feedback from customers of the clinic themselves and were given a survey to  help inform our designs further to suit the needs of the users of the branding items required.

 

As we used InDesign, it was crucial to check the document before exporting to print PDFs and also export with the correct settings. We learnt that discussing the print finishes with the clients was important to finalise their needs. On this particular real job, the client out sourced the printer so it was important for us to give the printer strict instructions so that the deliverables were correctly printed/assembled. I feel like this is a vital lesson to learn, and it has made us aware of things that can possibly go wrong in an authentic work situation, which now we feel prepared for.

We learnt how to ensure that all the files are ready for press and to check multiple times for any errors in the PDFs. We had multiple design solutions which meant we handled different manufacturing methods from print to digital and large 3D format which meant we could gain experience with all of these. We also learnt about the design constraints surrounding each of these and the practicality that is involved in producing them for a client or manufacturer.

To conclude, throughout this process collectively we found it to be a successful project. As a collective we met all the criteria set by the client and found working with a real life design brief allowed us to gain a wider idea of what will entail when working with clients after we have graduated and go out into the world of work. Once we had produced the final design solutions we received positive feedback from the clients and were happy as we exceeded their exceptions of the final product due to the low funding the clinic had to due being a charitable organisation.
